Awujale’s Death: Ijebu Closes Major Markets
The leadership of markets across Ijebu-Ode have directed all markets and shops to remain shut today, Monday, June 14th, 2025, to mourn the passing of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
A resident of Ijebu Ode who is also a close ally of Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, Mr Abiodun Adejare, told TheGuardian on Monday morning that the move by market leaders and other stakeholders serves as a mark of respect for the respected monarch.
He added that the decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the market leaders’ council in the state on Sunday.
”Markets in Ijebu-Ode will be shut today as a mark of respect to our great King, who passed away on Sunday. May his soul rest in peace,” Abiodun told TheGuardian.
The paramount ruler died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 years.
He reportedly died in the evening at his Ijebu Ode GRA residence in Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The news of Oba Awujale’s death came on the heels of that of the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a United Kingdom hospital also on Sunday after a protracted illness.
