Ayo Adebanjo: Nigeria Lost A Titan Of Progressive Politics – Aregbesola

Former Governor of Osun State and immediate past Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has described the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, as a fearless advocate for democracy, social justice, and progressive politics whose passing marks the end of an era.
In a tribute and condolence message on Monday, Aregbesola eulogized Adebanjo as a statesman whose unwavering commitment to federalism, parliamentary democracy, and egalitarianism shaped Nigeria’s political landscape.
He noted that Adebanjo’s life was dedicated to championing the cause of the people and ensuring that governance prioritized their welfare and security.
“Papa Adebanjo emphasized that humans must be at the centre of all economic, social, political, and cultural policies.
He believed that governments should prioritize citizens’ welfare and security, and that their policies on education, healthcare, environment, and treatment of women, children, and youth are indicative of their disposition to this cause.”

Reminiscing on his last moment with the late elder statesman, Aregbesola recounted his visit to Pa Adebanjo on November 19, 2024, where, despite his frail health, the Afenifere leader engaged in deep intellectual discourse on nation-building.
He described the encounter as illuminating and enriching, revealing Adebanjo’s enduring passion for a just and progressive society.
“Papa was in high spirits during our visit, physically and spiritually engaged. He commended our stance on economic, social, and political issues, emphasizing that the well-being of citizens must always be at the core of governance,” Aregbesola stated.
Aregbesola further noted that Adebanjo remained a steadfast disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s ideals, advocating tirelessly for policies that prioritized education, healthcare, and the welfare of women, children, and youth.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, Aregbesola lamented that another opportunity to tap from Adebanjo’s wealth of wisdom would no longer be possible. He prayed for his peaceful repose and extended condolences to his family, associates, and the progressive political movement in Nigeria.
“With Papa Adebanjo’s passage, Nigeria has lost a consistent voice for economic, political, and social progress. May Almighty God grant him a joyful reawakening and sustain his legacy,” he concluded.
