haista Zahida, 22, gave birth to her daughter through the natural delivery method at a state-run hospital in Multan city (city in Pakistan) last week. The baby girl, named Laraib, was born with her heart pumping outside her body, leaving the doctors and her parents stunned and confused.

Though her organ is reportedly functioning properly, doctors say she will need major surgery to place the heart back inside the body to keep her alive. The Pakistan doctors, however, say they are unable to perform the surgery. Therefore the girl will have to be flown to Europe, as that will be her only chance of survival. The baby’s parents, Mrs Zahida and Mr Baloch, 28, are extremely devastated by the state of their first child. And since the doctors have informed them that their baby’s case cannot be solved locally, they are seeking for treatment abroad.

Despite the organ functioning properly, doctors say she will need surgery to place it back inside her body to keep her alive. Laraib is said to be currently in the intensive care unit at The Children’s Hospital in Lahore where doctors are trying to keep her alive. “She looks normal but we are worried what will happen to our baby as doctors have told us that treatment for such a condition is not available in Pakistan,” says Mr Baloch.

The baby girl was reportedly diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called Ectopia cordis. Ectopia cordis, the medics say, is a genetic condition that occurs in approximately one in every 126,000 births. Infants with the malformation tend to die within the first few days of their life. It is not yet clear when the surgery will be performed on the infant.

The baby’s father is pleading for help from the Pakistan government so that his daughter can be flown outside the country for a surgery. “Doctors told me that treatment for such a condition will be available in any European country. I’m appealing to the Pakistan and Punjab governments to help me,” says Mr Baloch. Dr Ibrahim Ansari, who has taken care of the mother and daughter, says in his long career he has never seen a newborn with such a rare condition. “But there is some hope. The baby may survive if pediatric surgeons can operate on her to put her organ back in her chest,” says Dr Ansari. For now, the baby’s parents can only pray and hope that the much needed help will come soon if their baby’s life is to be saved.
