Baltasar Engonga Faces 18 Years in Jail over Corruption, 400 Leaked Sex Tapes
Baltasar Engonga, former head of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, is facing up to 18 years in prison as his trial over corruption charges continues in Malabo.
Engonga, who has been detained at the notorious Black Beach Prison since September 2024, is accused of embezzlement, unlawful enrichment, and abuse of office while serving as Director General of Insurance and Reinsurance between 2015 CFS francs (about $1.5 million).
He may also be banned from holding public office.
In a sensational twist, investigators discovered over 400 sex tapes during a search of Engonga’s office and residence.
The videos, reportedly recorded with the consent of those involved, feature prominent women, including wives of ministers, security chiefs, and relatives of top government officials.
Many of the recordings have been leaked online, triggering widespread public outrage.
Engonga is being tried alongside six former senior officials, including Carmelo Julio Matogo Ndong and Florentina Iganga Iñandji. Authorities accuse them of being part of a broad network involved in looting state funds.
The defence is expected to begin presenting its case this week.
