Bandits Force Zamfara Residents To Flee Over ₦10m, AK-47, Motorcycles Demand
Residents of Mai Tukunya in Dansadau district, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, have begun abandoning their homes after armed bandits issued a final ultimatum demanding ₦10 million, an AK-47 rifle, and three Honda motorcycles to spare the village.
Entire families, including children and the elderly, have embarked on a journey of displacement, walking under the harsh sun with no clear destination.
Security analyst, Bakatsine, explained the devastating impact on families who have endured over a decade of continuous threats.
“For a population that has spent more than ten years under constant attacks, this demand was not only unrealistic but crushing,” the expert said.
“Farms are unsafe, businesses have collapsed, and livelihoods destroyed. Hunger, fear, and uncertainty have replaced the wealth they once had.”
One displaced family member said leaving was the only option. “With no viable alternatives, people chose survival over attachment to land. Entire families, children, mothers, the elderly, began a painful journey into displacement.”
Reports indicate many walked for hours on foot, some while observing the Ramadan fast, facing exhaustion and uncertainty about where they would reach.
Those who remained behind faced life-threatening conditions.
Bakatsine noted that the situation in Mai Tukunya reflects a broader regional crisis.
“Across the region, insecurity has rendered roads unsafe, homes vulnerable, and schools prone to attacks. Communities that once thrived are now emptying as fear replaces hope.”
