Bandits Invade Ondo Community, Kill Monarch
Suspected bandits on Wednesday evening stormed Agamọ Community, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State and invaded the palace of the community’s traditional ruler Oba Kehinde Falodun, leading to the death of the monarch.
According to Punch Online, community sources said about 10 heavily armed men stormed the monarch’s residence, attempting to abduct him. However, the traditional ruler reportedly resisted their efforts.
“When the assailants shot at him several times and the bullets didn’t penetrate, they hit him on the head with a heavy object, leading to his death,” a resident who pleaded anonymity to the newspaper.
However, confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said the police had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
“The victim was later found a few metres away with gunshot wounds. He was confirmed dead at the scene,” Jimoh said.
He added that police operatives and local security groups swiftly mobilised to the area following the incident.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), alongside tactical teams from the command, promptly mobilised officers in collaboration with local security outfits.
Atuluse Security, local hunters, and Amotekun operatives also assisted in combing adjoining bushes and surrounding areas in a bid to apprehend the perpetrators. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects,” the police spokesperson stated.
Jimoh further assured residents that security operations in the area had been intensified to prevent further attacks.
“Monitoring and surveillance activities have been intensified across the area to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further breakdown of law and order. The public is assured that no stone will be left unturned in bringing those responsible for the heinous act to justice,” he said.
The gruesome killing comes barely weeks after suspected bandits attacked Ayede Community, also in Akure North, abducting a pregnant woman, Mrs. Mary Jesulayomi, who was later freed after a ransom was reportedly paid.
In response to rising insecurity, the Ondo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun) recently arrested 12 suspects linked to banditry in the local government area.
Residents have since expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, urging security agencies to strengthen patrols and restore peace to affected communities.
