Bayelsa Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has filed a lawsuit against the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other officials over an alleged plot to remove him from office.

In an originating summons (FHC/ABJ/CS/2212025) filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Ewhrudjakpo, through his lawyer Reuben Egwuaba, alleged that members of the state assembly are being pressured to impeach him for refusing to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), unlike Governor Douye Diri, who recently quit the party.

The suit also claims that some Local Government Chairmen, including Sagbama LGA’s Mrs. Alice Tange, are being threatened with dismissal for refusing to leave the PDP along with the governor.

On October 27, Justice Emeka Nwite, after hearing Egwuaba’s ex-parte motion, ordered the defendants to appear in court and show cause why the interim reliefs sought by Ewhrudjakpo should not be granted.

The judge adjourned the matter to November 13 for the defendants to respond.

The defendants listed in the suit include the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the IGP, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), the Attorney General of Bayelsa State, the Chief Judge, and the Clerk of the Assembly.

Ewhrudjakpo is seeking interim orders restraining the defendants from: removing or impeaching him in disregard of Sections 188 and 36 of the Constitution; initiating impeachment notices or proceedings; holding meetings aimed at his impeachment; recognising any APC member as deputy governor; and withdrawing his security protection pending the hearing of the motion on notice.
