Benjamin Hundeyin Reportedly Set To Replace Muyiwa Adejobi As Nigerian Police Spokesman

The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, is reportedly set to take over from Muyiwa Adejobi as the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Adejobi, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, was removed as Force Public Relations Officer and redeployed to the Delta State Command.

Hundeyin has served as the image maker of the Lagos State Police Command since March 2022 and is now expected to step into Adejobi’s shoes at Force Headquarters.

Adejobi, who for years was the public face of the Nigeria Police, leaves behind a tenure marred by controversies. At the Force Headquarters, he was repeatedly accused of shielding the institution from accountability, stifling dissent on social media and repressing critics of the police.

Within the Force, senior officers openly alleged that he was entangled in what they described as “women issues.” Despite these allegations, Adejobi was controversially promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, a development that drew criticism both inside and outside the Force.

His tenure also attracted international attention. Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, had petitioned the United States Embassy to revoke his visa over alleged abuse of office and repression of dissent.

Adejobi was further accused by individuals including Olamide Thomas, a nurse who claimed he victimised her after she rejected his advances, and Dorcas Adeyinka, a UK-based woman who accused him of framing her for murder before suing him for violation of her fundamental rights.

Amidst the allegations, Adejobi reportedly resorted to issuing police statements through proxy organisations such as Ndigbo Young Professionals, South West Youth Alliance, Swift Reporters and The Integrity Youth Alliance.

One of the most infamous scandals under his watch was the alleged theft of activist Omoyele Sowore’s Ray-Ban glasses during the #PoliceProtest by a cameraman attached to him. The glasses were later returned after Sowore exposed the culprit’s identity.

Reacting recently, Sowore described Adejobi as “one of the worst policemen ever recruited into the Nigeria Police Force,” accusing him of dishonesty and abuse of power.
