Benue Bishops Reject Emergency Rule
The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Benue Chapter, has opposed calls for emergency rule in the state, declaring their full support for Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Speaking in Makurdi on Saturday, Archbishop Alexander Nyoonkyegh, the State Overseer, described Alia as their “brother in the vineyard” who deserves the backing of all true men of God.
Some bishops had previously advocated for emergency rule in response to growing insecurity in the state.
But Nyoonkyegh dismissed such suggestions, insisting what Benue needs is unity and support for the governor to address the crisis.
“What we need now in Benue is unity and support for the governor to succeed,” he said.
“We cannot continue to talk about military takeover or emergency rule. We are not even sure a Benue son would be appointed as the sole administrator.
“Look at what happened in Rivers — a sole administrator was appointed from another state.”
The archbishop said the Bible encourages submission to authority, stressing that only God gives power to leaders.
“As fathers of faith, when you have a son and brother in the vineyard doing well, you encourage him,” he added.
He acknowledged the security challenges but noted that the governor was making efforts.
“Apart from insecurity, which he is trying to tackle, what fundamental offence has he committed?” Nyoonkyegh asked.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu for directing the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, to relocate to Benue.
“Since his arrival, we have not heard of any further attacks. Let the peace be maintained,” the archbishop said.
