As families in Benue continue to bury their dead, the state government is organising a fanfare to welcome President Bola Tinubu.

A circular from the Office of the Executive Governor on Special Groups Mobilisation, dated 17th June 2025 and signed by Hon. Francis U. Ngutswen, directed registered support groups to organise a “shoulder-to-shoulder spread/procession” from the airport to Wurukum Roundabout and on to Government House, Makurdi.

The mobilisation, according to the letter, was ordered by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who wants a “rousing welcome” for the President.

“Accreditation will be done strictly by the numbers and colours,” the circular stated.

The fanfare is expected to begin at the airport, pass through Wurukum Roundabout, and end at Government House, where the President is scheduled to speak.

Videos also circulating on social media showed streets in Makurdi designed with banners and billboards all expressing excitement at the President’s visit while many indigenes of the state continue to count their losses and loved ones who have died from attacks from unknown gunmen and terrorists in the last few months.

Critics have described the event as ill-timed and insensitive, accusing the state government of prioritising political optics over the death and displacement of victims.
