Bill To Create New States Scales Second Reading

A bill to amend the 1999 Constitution and create two new states from the existing Oyo State has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, son of the late Alaafin of Oyo, alongside six other lawmakers, seeks to create Oyo State with Oyo town as its capital and Ibadan State with Ibadan city as its capital.

During the plenary session on Tuesday, the constitution amendment bill was read for the second time and received approval from members of the House.

The proposal aims to divide Oyo State’s current 33 local government areas between the two newly proposed states.

The bill has now been referred to the Constitutional Review Committee for further legislative scrutiny and action.
