Blackout As National Grid Collapses For 10th Time In 2024
Nigeria is plunged into darkness once again as the national grid has collapsed for the tenth time this year, raising urgent questions about the nation’s crumbling energy infrastructure under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Osun Defender reports that the the latest collapse, which occurred at about 2.09 pm on Tuesday has thrown millions across states into prolonged blackouts, with no timeline for restoration given by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Frustrated Nigerians with small business owners, families, and students lamenting the impact of these frequent collapses. Many are relying solely on generators to keep the lights on, a costly and unsustainable alternative amidst rising fuel prices.
Despite promises by the Tinubu administration to improve power generation and distribution, the frequent collapses have only intensified.
Osun Defender recalls that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had in October 2024 set up a forensic investigative committee to address the incessant grid collapses.

A statement by the minister’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji, said Adelabu, worried at the disturbance on the national grid which threw some sections of the country into darkness “twice” within the past week, summoned the leadership of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Transmission company of Nigeria to an emergency meeting.
The minister expressed displeasure at the incident, which he said, was “capable of rubbishing the giant strides made in the last one year which has led to an increased generation and distribution of 5, 527 megawatts, a record generation in three years.”
