The Kano State Government has referred multiple petitions and counter-petitions against Islamic scholar, Sheikh Lawan Triumph, to the Kano State Shura Council for detailed review and advice.

The petitions, filed by a coalition of Islamic organisations, were triggered by controversial remarks the scholar allegedly made during a recent preaching session in Kano.

The groups including Safiyatul Islam of Nigeria, Tijjaniya Youth Enlightenment Forum, Interfaith Parties for Peace and Development, Sairul Qalbi Foundation, Habbullah Mateen Foundation, Imams of Juma’at Mosques under the Qadiriyya Movement, Committee of Sunnah Preachers, and Multaqa Ahbab Alsufiyya argued that the remarks were blasphemous and offensive to Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

In a statement on Friday, the Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Tanko, said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had directed that the matter be referred to the Shura Council, a respected advisory body known for its mediating role in religious disputes.

“This measure is in line with our commitment to maintaining peace and unity among all religious groups in Kano,” the statement read.

The SSG, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, appealed for calm among residents, assuring them that the matter would be handled with seriousness and respect for religious sentiments.

“We call on all citizens to continue their daily activities peacefully and lawfully. The government assures everyone that this issue will be managed with utmost care,” he said.

Representatives of some of the petitioning groups also voiced their concerns. A spokesperson for the Committee of Sunnah Preachers said, “Our concern is to protect the sanctity of the Prophet’s name and preserve religious harmony in Kano. We trust the Shura Council will provide wise counsel to resolve this matter amicably.”

Similarly, an official from Safiyatul Islam of Nigeria stressed the importance of balancing free speech with respect for religious values.

“Freedom of speech is important, but it must be exercised within the bounds of respect for our faith and values. We hope this referral will lead to greater understanding and peace,” the official noted.
