Former PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Olabode George, has criticised a Federal High Court ruling that stopped the party from holding its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, scheduled for 15 to 16 November.

Justice James Omotosho of Abuja’s Federal High Court on Friday restrained the PDP from proceeding with the event, citing alleged violations of the 1999 Constitution, the party’s constitution, and INEC guidelines.

The judge ruled that the party had not conducted proper state congresses before organising the convention, calling it a breach of internal democratic procedures.

Reacting to the decision, George described it as “shocking” and “dangerous” for Nigeria’s democracy, warning that such interventions could create a precedent that undermines political stability.

He insisted that political parties should have the autonomy to resolve internal matters and that judicial interference should only occur in clear cases of constitutional violations.

“Judges are meant to interpret the law, not manage party affairs,” George said.

Questioning the legal basis of the ruling, he pointed out that INEC monitored the PDP’s congresses and had not flagged any irregularities.

He asked, “If INEC has no complaints, why is the court acting? Could there be political motives?”

George stressed that the PDP, established in 1998, has a longstanding record of following proper procedures for congresses and conventions.

He warned that the court’s action could weaponise the judiciary against political stability in Africa’s largest democracy.

He called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to review what he deemed an excessive intervention.

Meanwhile, he urged PDP members to remain calm, continue respecting internal processes, and explore legal avenues to overturn the decision.

The party is expected to pursue further court action in the coming days to safeguard its internal governance and maintain momentum ahead of national elections.
