Boko Haram Kills Over 300, Including 100 Soldiers, In Five-Week Resurgence – Report
More than 300 Nigerians, including over 100 military personnel and 200 civilians, have been killed in renewed Boko Haram attacks in the North-East, according to a new report by Nextier SPD.
The report, published in the latest edition of Nextier SPD Policy Weekly and titled “Re-thinking Nigeria’s Counterinsurgency Strategy: The Aftermath of the Boko Haram Resurgence,” covers a five-week period and highlights the insurgents’ growing strength.
It revealed that Boko Haram and ISWAP factions carried out 252 attacks between November 2024 and April 2025, deploying sophisticated tactics such as IEDs, ambushes on military convoys, and assaults on IDP camps.
In January 2025 alone, 92 deaths were recorded, despite an average number of incidents.
The extremists have taken control of three local government areas in Borno State, disrupting humanitarian efforts and weakening state authority.
The report, authored by Dr. Ndu Nwokolo and Dr. Chibuike Njoku, also warned of increasing military fatigue, worsening civil-military relations, and a spike in kidnappings, particularly in April.
Despite ongoing military operations, the resurgence exposes the shortcomings of Nigeria’s kinetic approach to insurgency.
“Military victories do not necessarily translate to improved community security and stabilisation,” the report stated, citing poverty, youth unemployment, and lack of education as key factors fuelling extremism.
It called for a holistic, people-centred strategy that combines military action with socioeconomic reforms, dialogue, and grassroots initiatives.
According to the authors, Nigeria’s current counterinsurgency plan remains “reactive rather than preventative,” and unless urgent reforms are implemented, the country may continue to struggle in its fight against terrorism.
