Buhari’s Bill On Water Resources Splits Northern, Southern Senators And Many Other Interesting Headlines For Today

 

An executive bill sent to the Senate seeking to concentrate the control of water resources in the hand of the Federal Government has divided senators across regional lines. The PUNCH reports that while northern senators support the bill and its objectives, their southern counterparts are opposed to it. Those opposed to it pointed out that the bill, if passed into law, would counter the current move towards devolution of powers, which is currently skewed in favour of the Federal Government.

Report coming from the DAILY SUN says 58 universities declared illegal. The national Universities Commission (NUC) declared the University of Accountancy and management Studies, Christians Of Charity American university Of Science and Technology, Nkpor, Anambra State, University of Applied Sciences and Management, Port Novo, Republic of Benin, Blacksmith University, Akwa and 53 other illegal. They have all been shut down. According to the NUC, which is saddled with the responsibility of granting approval for all academic programmes run in the nations universities and granting approval for the establishment of all higher  educational institutions offering degree programmes, the affected institutions were yet  to be licensed by the Federal Government.

Soyinka, northern leaders tango. Nobel laureate professor Wole Soyinka has charged president Mohammadu Buhari to cry out for help from the international community to stem the killings by herdsmen which he , yesterday described as ethnic cleansing. Speaking during a courtesy call on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Soyinka expressed regret that the administration was treating the malaise as a ringworm itch instead of  the deadly cancer it is. THE NATION brings to light how $8.5b was released for power projects in 13 years. The controversy over the $16billion power projects in the country raged on yesterday with a highly placed source linked with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NPDHC) claiming that between $8.4billion and $8.58billion, out of the projected cash, was allocated. The release of the $8.58billion was between 2005 and 2018, which covered about 13 years (2005-2008) under the administration of ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan  and president Mohammadu Buhari.

Some leaders of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) yesterday faced triials over their involvement in the sharing of $115million campaign funds from former Petroleum Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison –Madueke, for the 2015 elections. In kano, two ministers under the Former President Goodluck Jonathan- Ibrahim Shekarau and Aminu Wali were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering.

14 Govs, 63 others lead APC for EKITI gov battle. The All progressive Congress (APC) on Thursday, inaugurated a 77-member campaign committee ahead of the July 14 Ekiti State governorship election. The committee was made up of 14 governors, seven federal lawmakers reports NIGERIAN TRIBUNE.

The implementation of basel III scheduled III scheduled to take effect by the end of 2018, is likely to be delayed as the Central Bank Of Nigeria (GBN) keeps its focus for now on the implementation of international Financial Reporting Standard 9(IFRS 9), according to a leading emerging frontier markets investment bank, Renaissance capital.
