Nigeria’s Super Falcons have once again proven their dominance on the African football scene, as they were crowned Africa Women National Team of the Year at the ongoing Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards held on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco.
The Falcons edged out stiff competition from South Africa’s Bayana Bayana and Morocco’s Lionesses, who finished second and third, respectively, to clinch the prestigious title.
This recognition comes on the heels of their outstanding performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Under the guidance of Randy Waldrum, the Super Falcons showed grit and class, starting their campaign with a hard-fought goalless draw against Olympic champions Canada.
They followed this with a pulsating 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia before securing another goalless draw against Ireland, which earned them a place in the knockout stages.
Although their journey ended in the second round with a narrow penalty shootout loss to England after a 120-minute stalemate, the Super Falcons left an indelible mark on the tournament.

The team recorded two clean sheets — a first for any African team in the history of the competition — showcasing their defensive prowess on the global stage.
Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala also made history during the tournament, scoring against co-hosts Australia to become the first African player to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup editions.
The Falcons’ resilience and consistency did not go unnoticed, earning them this coveted CAF award, which further cements their status as Africa’s leading women’s football team.
This recognition is a testament to the team’s hard work and an inspiration for African football, especially as they continue to raise the bar for excellence in the sport. The CAF Awards night also served as a reminder of the quality and potential that African women’s football holds.
With this latest achievement, the Super Falcons have set their sights on maintaining their dominance in upcoming tournaments while inspiring the next generation of female footballers across the continent.
