Campaign Video Of Tinubu’s Free Electricity Promise Trends Online As National Grid Collapses Again

  • PublishedOctober 19, 2024

An old campaign video of President Bola Tinubu promising free electricity has resurfaced online, sparking widespread reactions as Nigeria’s national grid collapsed for the third time in one week.

In the video, which has been making rounds on social media, Tinubu emphatically vowed to provide stable electricity to Nigerians and eliminate estimated billing. He said, “Whichever way, by all means necessary, you must have electricity and you will not pay for estimated bill anymore. A promise made will be a promise kept.”

He went further to boldly state that if he failed to keep this promise, Nigerians should not re-elect him for a second term. “If I won’t keep the promise and I come back for a second term, don’t vote for me. That’s the truth. Unless I give adequate reasons why I couldn’t deliver,” Tinubu declared during the campaign.

The resurfacing of this clip comes at a time when the country is grappling with its third national grid collapse in a week, leading to widespread power outages across the nation.

For the third time in one week, Nigeria experienced yet another national grid collapse, plunging the country into darkness early Saturday morning.

It was gathered that power generation went off around 8:16 a.m., following previous collapses that occurred on Monday and Tuesday, as efforts to restore the grid continued to falter.

Findings revealed that power generation was recorded at 3,042 megawatts at 8:00 a.m., peaking earlier at 3,968 megawatts around 7:00 a.m.

However, by 9:00 a.m., this had drastically dropped to a mere 47 megawatts, leaving power distribution companies with no allocation, as supply to them stood at 0.00 megawatts at the time of filing this report.

The cause of the grid collapse remains unclear, as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) could not be reached for comment. This latest outage is expected to exacerbate the already strained power situation across the country, with businesses and households bearing the brunt of the instability.
