The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, has decried what it described as media blackmail targeted at Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement issued by Reverend John Joseph Hayab, the regional CAN Chairman, the association urged journalists to practise ethical and responsible reporting, warning against the spread of unverified claims.

“Just because Seyi is Tinubu’s son, he should not become a subject or object of media blackmail and propaganda to destroy him. There will be life after his father’s administration is over,” Hayab said.

He stressed that spreading falsehoods goes against Nigeria’s cultural and religious values.

“Spreading lies against anyone is not acceptable in our culture and religion,” he stated.

Hayab cautioned that such media practices could harm national unity and hinder development.

“People who have found this pattern suitable to destroy others should please stop it because no nation can grow by people destroying one another,” he added.

CAN advised media outlets to confirm facts before publishing stories and urged Nigerians to reject efforts to tarnish the image of others.

“No media should write any story about anyone based on hearsay without investigation,” the statement warned.

Hayab also noted the danger of normalising character assassination, especially among the youth.

“When you celebrate the destruction of another person today, you may be the next. Therefore, Nigerians should denounce stories that are meant for character assassination to protect our youths and future generation from thinking it is an acceptable practice,” he concluded.
