The Catholic Diocese of Auchi announced on Thursday that Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, who had been kidnapped, was released by his abductors.
Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, the Director of Communications for the Diocese, shared in a statement that Fr. Oyode was freed around 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, in a village close to Ajaokuta, Kogi State.
Fr. Oyode had been abducted on October 27, 2024, when armed attackers targeted the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi-Agenebode, located in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The incident occurred while priests and seminarians were engaged in their evening prayers and Benediction.

“The bishop also takes this opportunity to call on governments at all levels to address the deteriorating security situation in Edo North Senatorial District and Edo State. Proactive measures must be taken to ensure people can return to their normal peaceful lives in their homes, on their farms, and while travelling.”
