Celebration As Osun Reading Hero, Ajao Smashes 214-Hours Read-A-Thon, Awaits Confirmation

There was wild celebration across Osogbo metropolis on Wednesday, as Osun reading enthusiast, Samson Ajao smashed his 214-hour marathon reading-aloud attempt.

Ajao, who started reading on Monday, 6th May 2024 to beat the current Guinness World Record holder, Rybai Isako, ended the marathon reading aloud around 11 am on Wednesday.

In the company of supporters, friends, organisers and Iree Student Union, the champion, Ajao in an entourage was spotted at Olaiya, Ogo-Oluwa, Odi-olowo and Okefia axis projecting his great feat to Osun residents.

Since the commencement of the reading challenge on Monday, some important and notable personalities and government appointees across the state have been coming around to the venue to show their solidarity and support.

Among such persons include, the second wife of Governor Adeleke; Mrs Ngozi Adeleke, the Speaker Osun House of Assembly, Honorable Adewale Egbedun, SUBEB Chairman, Ibukun Fadiope, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Students’ Matters, Bashiru Aderoju, the Elerinmo of Er mo Ijesa, Oba Dr Micheal Odunayo Ajayi Arowotawaya II, and the Rector of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Mr Kehinde Alabi among others.

A statement by Ajaos publicity team appreciated all the dignitaries, stakeholders in Osun State, students and members of the public who visited and supported him during his attempt.

The statement read, “In a triumphant culmination of perseverance, dedication, and unwavering commitment to literacy, Ajao Samson Olamilekan, the former Student Union president of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has achieved a monumental feat in his Guinness World Record attempt for the longest marathon reading aloud. Against all odds, and with the grace of God and the collective efforts of supporters, Ajao has successfully surpassed the daunting challenge of reading aloud for an astonishing 214 hours and counting.

“The journey to this remarkable achievement has been nothing short of extraordinary. OSUN DEFENDER reports that Ajao noted that the reason for embarking on the challenge is to resuscitate dwindling reading culture among Nigerian youths.

His reading books cut across several disciplines such as science, journalism, communication, finance, business, fiction and non-fiction, and administration.

As he completed the challenge today, supporters await official announcement from Guinness World Record confirming him as the new title holder.
