The incident which was caused by heavy rainfall occurred between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM as traders were arriving at the market to set up their stalls amid the rain.
Windstorms were said to had accompanied the downpour, uprooted the trees and trapped several people who had sought shelter under them or in nearby shops.

“Four individuals lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. They have been transported to the mortuary, while those injured are receiving treatment in hospital.”
He expressed gratitude that the casualty count wasn’t higher, attributing this to the early morning rain which deterred many from arriving at the market before the trees fell.
“This market is the largest in Edo North, attracting traders from across the state and neighbouring areas. The trees, which have stood for over a century, were uprooted unexpectedly by the wind,” Zibiri added.
While extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, Zibiri assured that the council would repair the damaged structures and remove all old trees from the market area.
