Robert Green has joined Chelsea on a one-year contract the club has announced.

Green joins the Blues from Huddersfield Town on a free transfer where he spent a year without making a single first-team appearance.

He becomes the third choice at Chelsea behind Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero.

The 38-year-old told the club’s official website: “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours. You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation.”

“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”

The highly experienced stopper began his career at Norwich City, making 200 appearances before departing for West Ham in 2006.

Green spent six years with West Ham before joining QPR for four seasons and left Loftus Road in 2016. From there he spent a year at Leeds before he signed for Huddersfield.

Green also earned 12 caps for England and began the 2010 World Cup as No1. However, he lost his place after his error gifted USA’s Clint Dempsey an equaliser in the opening game. His last cap came in 2012 against Norway.
