The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has strongly rejected claims that Chinese mining companies are involved in illegal operations or pay “protection money” to local militia groups.

The embassy described the allegations as “groundless” and “fabricated rumours,” in response to a bill recently introduced by members of the United States Congress accusing Chinese enterprises of funding terrorism in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Thursday evening via its official X account, the embassy spokesperson expressed “firm opposition and strong dissatisfaction” with the claims, emphasising that Chinese companies in Nigeria have often been victims of terrorist attacks themselves.

The embassy reiterated that the Chinese government enforces a “zero tolerance” policy toward any citizen or enterprise involved in illegal activities abroad.

“The overwhelming majority of Chinese mining companies in Nigeria have set an exemplary record of compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations,” the statement said. It also highlighted the companies’ contributions to local communities, environmental protection, and job creation.

The embassy accused individuals behind the U.S. bill of spreading false information to undermine China-Nigeria relations. It reaffirmed China’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and commitment to strengthening bilateral mining cooperation within the framework of local laws.

The statement urged all parties to stop spreading rumours and called on Nigerian media and citizens to view China-Nigeria mining cooperation objectively, warning against exploitation by those with “ulterior motives” that could damage the friendship between the two countries.
