A 47-year-old civil servant with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corp, Ramoni Amore, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for defiling a 15-year-old minor (name withheld).

Justice Rahman Oshodi convicted Amore on a two-count charge brought against him by the Lagos State Government.

The defendant, who was first arraigned on July 28, 2021, had pleaded not guilty to charges of defilement and an attempt to procure an abortion, both contrary to the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

In delivering judgment, Justice Oshodi ruled that the prosecution successfully proved the case of defilement but failed to substantiate the claim of attempted abortion.

“No medical expert was presented to confirm that the substance given to the victim was poisonous, noxious, or capable of procuring an abortion,” the judge said.

He added, “Ramoni Amore, your conduct was grievous given your position as a law enforcement officer with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corp. You abused the trust reposed in you and intimidated the victim.

“I hereby sentence you to life imprisonment. Your name shall also be registered as a sex offender in the Lagos State register.”

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Olufumilayo Aluko, called four witnesses, including the survivor, her mother, a social worker, and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO).

The defense, led by Abel Iwoara, presented only one witness, the defendant himself.
