Cologne Sack Coach Despite Six-Point Lead Over Opponents
Things are tough at the top for second-tier German side Cologne, who have made the surprise decision to sack coach Markus Anfang, despite commanding a six-point lead over their promotion rivals.
Having joined from Holstein Kiel last summer, Anfang was on course to lead Cologne back into the Bundesliga, but supporters turned on him after the team failed to win any of their last four games.
The club decided enough was enough after Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Darmstadt, which gives second-place Hamburg the chance to move within three points of top spot if they win at Union Berlin on Sunday.
“It was necessary to change something in order to not endanger promotion,” said Cologne sporting director Armin Veh in a statement on Saturday.
