No fewer than 400 men, women and youths in Ayedire State Constituency of Osun State have benefited from a large-scale empowerment programme facilitated by the lawmaker representing the constituency in the State House of Assembly, Oderinwale Elisha Akinyemi.

The initiative, held on Thursday in Ileogbo, saw the distribution of tools, equipment and cash grants aimed at strengthening livelihoods and supporting small-scale businesses across the constituency.

The event also featured the formal endorsement of Oderinwale’s second term ambition.

Items distributed at the event included refrigerators, sewing machines, industrial machines, standing fans, grinding machines, vulcanising machines, gas cylinders, insecticide sprays, generators, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, motorcycles, mobile phones and cash grants.

Speaking at the programme, Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewunmi, described the initiative as a clear demonstration of people-centred leadership, noting that it reflects a governance approach anchored on citizens’ welfare.

“This is a further confirmation that the deeds of a man speak for him,” Oyewunmi said. “Even at higher levels, some past office holders did not achieve this within their tenure. This shows commitment to a people-first agenda.”

He also commended the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke for providing an enabling environment for lawmakers to deliver meaningful projects to their constituents.

“The governor plays a crucial role. Without funding, no lawmaker can execute projects. We must commend him for making resources available to support initiatives like this,” he added.

Oyewunmi further urged political stakeholders to embrace peaceful engagement ahead of future elections, stressing that performance, rather than propaganda, should shape electoral choices.

“No amount of abuse can win votes. If your product is good, it will sell. Politics should be peaceful because Osun needs stability to progress,” he said.

In his remarks, Akinyemi said the empowerment programme was part of his campaign promise to give back to the people within his first few years in office.

“When I was contesting, I promised that within two to three years, I would organise a programme like this. This is about giving back to the people who entrusted me with their mandate,” he said.

He disclosed that over 400 constituents received tools and equipment, while more than 100 others benefited from cash grants to support their businesses.

“The beneficiaries were carefully selected. These are people we know truly need the support and will use it judiciously,” the lawmaker stated.

Akinyemi also expressed confidence in the political outlook of the state, maintaining that the incumbent governor continues to enjoy widespread acceptance among the electorate.

Beneficiaries and community stakeholders praised the initiative, describing it as unprecedented in the history of Ayedire constituency and a strong basis for endorsing the lawmaker for another term.

A community member, Tiamiyu Hussein Adedeji, described the programme as remarkable. “We have not seen this kind of empowerment before in Ayedire. It shows the lawmaker is committed to the welfare of the people,” he said.

Another beneficiary, Adeyemo Mudasiru Adeniyi, said the intervention cut across major communities in the area. “I feel lucky to be part of this. He has been supportive, not just in Ileogbo but across the communities,” he noted.

The event also spotlighted previous interventions by the lawmaker, including the payment of examination fees for hundreds of students, further consolidating grassroots support within the constituency.
