Court Adjourns As Yahaya Bello Faces New Charges

An Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama has adjourned the arraignment of the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to November 27, 2024.

This follows fresh 16-count charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing him of criminal breach of trust and conspiracy involving a whopping N110.4 billion.

The presiding judge, Justice Maryann Anenih, granted the EFCC’s request for an extension to enable Bello’s appearance in court.

The prosecution counsel, Jamiu Agoro, informed the court that the 30-day period granted for the public summons issued on October 3 had not elapsed, necessitating the delay.

He also sought approval to post the hearing notice at Bello’s last known address to ensure compliance.

Recall that the court had earlier directed that the summons be widely published and displayed at Bello’s residence and within the court premises to facilitate his appearance.

Meanwhile, Bello’s co-defendants, Shuabu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, who are facing similar charges, were confirmed to be on administrative bail. Their counsels, Aliyu Saiki, SAN, and ZE Abbas, did not oppose the EFCC’s application for adjournment.

Justice Anenih, while ruling on the matter, acknowledged the submissions by all parties and approved the adjournment.

The court fixed November 27 for Bello’s arraignment, emphasizing the need for due diligence in ensuring the presence of the former governor in court.
