The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano on Wednesday secured the conviction and sentencing of controversial TikTok influencer, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, for abusing the Nigerian currency in violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.

Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court, Kano, handed down the ruling after Kunya pleaded guilty to the one-count amended charge brought against her.

The offence stemmed from a viral video clip showing the influencer spraying and trampling on Naira notes while dancing in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, on December 28, 2023.

Kunya, who was initially arrested in January 2025, had been granted administrative bail by the EFCC.

However, she absconded and failed to appear for her court arraignment, prompting a manhunt.

After weeks of surveillance, she was rearrested by operatives of the Commission on 16 March and subsequently arraigned on 20 May, where she admitted guilt.

Justice Amobeda sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment with an option of N50,000 fine.

In a move aimed at reform and awareness, the judge also appointed her as an ambassador for both the EFCC and the CBN to lead social media advocacy against Naira abuse.

She is now mandated to use her online platforms to sensitise followers on the legal and civic implications of mishandling the national currency.
