Court Reverses Suspension Of Edo LG Chairmen
A High Court in Benin, on Friday, annulled the suspension of the chairmen and vice chairmen of all 18 local government councils in Edo State, directing their immediate restoration to office.
Justice Efe Ikponmwonba, who presided over the matter, gave the ruling following a suit filed by the affected chairmen and their deputies.
The claimants had approached the court to challenge the resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly, which had earlier endorsed their suspension.
In a clear and decisive ruling, Justice Ikponmwonba restrained Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Edo State Government, and other defendants in the case from taking further actions based on the Assembly’s resolution.
The court ordered that all parties return to the status quo as of December 12, 2024, pending the determination of the motion on notice filed on that same date.
“The suspension as passed by the state House of Assembly cannot stand until this matter is fully resolved,” the court ruled.

Justice Ikponmwonba also set February 17, 2025, as the next hearing date for the matter, directing that hearing notices be issued and served on all defendants to ensure their appearance.
The embattled local government officials had argued that their suspension violated due process and was politically motivated. Friday’s ruling has not only restored their offices but has also raised questions about the legality of the House of Assembly’s actions.
