Customs Officers Shoot Driver Dead In Osun

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service on Sunday allegedly shot dead a yet-to-be-identified commuter along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in Osun State.

The incident occurred at the Onibueja area in Ido-Osun near a police roadblock around 10 am.

The perpetrators were said to be security operatives in mufti who were reportedly pursuing the deceased driver from the Iwo end of the road.

A video of the incident circulated online, showed the victim’s vehicle was seen riddled with bullets, while angry residents gathered at the scene and demanded a probe into the incident.

A resident of Onibueja, who identified himself simply as Sunday said the incident attracted many people to the scene.

“The man was driving towards the Osogbo end from the Iwo end of the road when some security operatives in mufti shot at his vehicle.

“He died right there behind the wheel. The car was riddled with bullets, and people rushed to the scene. The incident happened close to a police roadblock.

“But those who killed him were not wearing uniforms, so we cannot really say who they are. People were very angry over the development,” Sunday said.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident but said the suspected shooters were Customs operatives.

“The incident happened, but those who allegedly fired the shots are Customs operatives.

“We have arrested two people in connection with the incident. I will brief the press fully in a few minutes,” Ojelabi said.
