The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has expelled former Governor Rauf Aregbesola over alleged anti-party activities, months after declaring him a non-member of the party.

Osun APC had earlier purportedly suspended Aregbesola on October 29, 2024, after some of its leaders including the party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, had also restated that the former governor, was ‘inconsequential,’ and that his political influence had ‘waned,’ stressing that the APC will win the 2026 governorship election in the state without him.

Osun Defender had also in October 2024 reported a statement credited to the spokesperson of Osun APC, Kola Olabisi, that the party does not need the former Governor in the 2026 governorship election in the state.

The comments were made months after the APC led by Sooko Lawal, a staunch loyalist of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, suspended and expelled members of the party for their loyalty to Aregbesola.

In the fresh letter, the party’s leadership accused Aregbesola of violating Article 21 of the APC constitution, and stressed that his actions had undermined the unity and integrity of the party.

Osun Defender reports that Aregbesola and members of his political family, Omoluabi Progressives, had on Sunday, January 26, announced their exit from the APC, days before the expulsion.

The group took the decision during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by members of the tendency in the 332 wards of the state.

At the meeting, Aregbesola said it was time to work “aggressively” to entrench good governance in Osun. The former minister said the efforts to position the group for the task ahead would soon materialise.

“The path we have toed is a smooth path, highly reassuring and full of good tides that will propel our dear state to greatness,” Aregbesola said.

Abosede Oluwaseun, spokesperson of the group, said members resolved to quit APC because of “ostracisation from the party, suspension and expulsion of leaders without fair hearing, and continuous denigration of the structure.”

Oluwaseun said members of the group were ready to join another political party ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
