The appointment of Afrobeats icon, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund has stirred heated debate across social media.
Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier explained that the initiative was introduced to mobilise private funding for sports development and reduce dependence on government resources.
According to him, Davido is expected to use his global influence to attract sponsorships and partnerships that will boost Osun’s sporting projects.
While some Nigerians applauded the decision as a creative way to revitalise the state’s sports sector, others accused the governor of turning governance into a family affair.
An X (formerly Twitter) user, @DrTaiwo, wrote, “This is good news for @osun_state_gov. With @davido’s influence and popularity, it will attract investors and stakeholders to invest in Osun State’s sports ministry and can even generate revenue. He should make sure that the stadium renovation is completed as soon as possible.”
Another user, @suzzybaby98, also supported the decision, saying, “Let’s be honest, this is not even an appointment to congratulate or politicize. It’s a strategic responsibility, not a political office. Davido won’t be earning a salary from this; instead, he’ll be using his name, influence, and resources to raise funds and attract sponsorship.”
But several others expressed scepticism about the choice, citing favouritism and concerns about Davido’s busy music career.
“This is laughable. How will he successfully fulfil his role in this appointment with his supposed busy schedule as an A-list artist?” @davidsalt_ asked.
Another critic, @Olazklop, commented, “Now political issues turn into a family business. Demeaning viable individuals capable of the same position. I love David but I don’t see any justification for his appointment. Which fund is he presiding over, or is this a gateway for dodgy business between families?”
@RetiredYouthøø7 added, “So in the whole of Osun State, there is no one to give that position except your nephew? Now I know these people want to add Osun State to the Adeleke family business.”
Similarly, @Sireadell queried, “Isn’t it criminal that a governor will appoint his nephew as chairman of anything relating to funds in a state he governs? What do these guys take us for?”
