Despite the rejection of the dissolution of the Osun State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party by PDP members of the National Assembly from the state, the Taminu-Turaki-led caretaker committee held its first meeting on Tuesday.
OSUN DEFENDER reports that the Taminu Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, last week Thursday, announced the appointment of a caretaker committee to oversee affairs of the party in Osun State.
A statement signed by Theophilus Dakas Shan, National Organising Secretary of the PDP, said the appointment was made by the National Working Committee (NWC) acting on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), in line with Section 29(2)(b) of the PDP Constitution (2025, as amended).
The PDP named Hon. Tunde Tijani, as the caretaker Chairman, while Hon. Bamidele Seyi-Abiola was named Secretary.
But the Osun PDP National Assembly Caucus, dismissed reports of the dissolution of the state Executive Committee of the party, describing the announcement as illegal, unconstitutional, and of no effect.
The caucus, while reacting to the reported dissolution in a statement signed by the 7 lawmakers, affirmed that the Osun State Executive Committee of the PDP was validly elected for a constitutionally guaranteed tenure of four years, which cannot be truncated or dissolved in clear contravention of the party’s constitution and in total breach of democratic norms.
The caucus stressed that a lawfully elected state executive committee enjoys a secured legal tenure, which cannot and must not be tampered with, particularly by an unrecognised and illegitimate national leadership structure.
“An unrecognised and unelected body lacks the legal authority to dissolve a validly elected and tenured state executive council. Such a purported dissolution is null, void, and of no consequence.
“The Osun State PDP Executive Committee remains valid, subsisting, and fully in charge. We urge our teeming members across Osun State to completely disregard this baseless announcement. The executive team has a four-year mandate and is constitutionally empowered to serve out its tenure without interference,” the caucus declared.
However, the secretary of the caretaker committee, Seyi Bamidele, in a statement on Tuesday, said members had their inaugural meeting where issues on how to reposition the party were discussed.
He also said the meeting which was held in Ibadan, marked the formal commencement of the committee’s assignment and provided an opportunity for members to deliberate on the current state of the party in Osun.
“The meeting marked the formal commencement of the committee’s assignment and provided an opportunity for members to deliberate on the current state of the party and the strategic direction for its revitalisation in Osun State.
“Discussions at the meeting focused on the need to rebuild trust, strengthen internal cohesion and reposition the party as a credible platform for progressive governance. Members emphasised the importance of inclusiveness, unity and collective responsibility as critical pillars for moving the party forward,” the statement noted.
Bamidele added that the committee, during the meeting, resolved to actively engage stakeholders at all levels of the party, including leaders, elders, youth, women, and grassroots members, with a view to fostering reconciliation and broad participation in party affairs.
“It was also agreed that efforts would be intensified towards strengthening party structures, improving communication, and ensuring a more organised and responsive system.
“Security consciousness, internal discipline, and vigilance against actions capable of undermining the party’s progress were also identified as important considerations in the ongoing rebuilding process,” Bamidele noted.
The caretaker committee reassured all party members and supporters that its work will be guided by transparency, fairness and the collective interest of the PDP.
