President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday received Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the newly-appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), at the State House Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, President Buhari told the former Finance Minister that despite the robust support Nigeria gave to her candidacy for the position as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, she earned it.
The President also lauded Nigerian women once again, who hold key positions in the country and abroad adding that the government would do its best in encouraging the youths and preparing them for better opportunities in the future.”
“We are happy you made it, but you earned it with your record of performance both at home and abroad.
”I congratulate you, as well as the country. I know you will represent us so well,” he said
In her response, the new WTO DG thanked President Buhari for his unwavering support adding that without his personal and direct intervention, it may not have worked.
“You nominated me, you wrote hundreds of letters, called up hundreds of world leaders.
“Without your personal and direct intervention, it may not have worked. The people of Nigeria also supported me massively.
“I sincerely thank the youths who were always encouraging, backing me up on social media.
“Since its establishment, only men have led the WTO. Now, a woman has emerged for the first time, and she’s a Nigerian.l am are so honoured and I believe this is a beginning of greater things to come,” she said.
