An 80-year-old retired soldier, Peter Ashom, on Thursday, attributed his alleged defilement of an eleven year old girl to the work of the devil.
The incident, Osun Defender gathered happened at Gyel in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Speaking with newsmen at the headquarters of the state police command while parading the suspect after his arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Okoro Julius Alawari, said the 80-year-old man lured the girl into his room under the pretence of sending her on an errand anytime she goes to sell groundnut.
Alawari who said the suspect was apprehended following a complaint by the girl’s parents, noted that the man forcefully had knowledge of the girl and threatened to kill her if she told anyone of the incident.
The suspect who claimed to be a retired soldier, while speaking with newsmen, confessed to the crime.
He however stated that he was pushed into it by the devil, adding that it was his first time committing such a crime.
“I was the only one at home when the girl entered my room with her sister. I sent the two of them to buy something for me, but it was only the girl who returned to deliver the message. I don’t know what came upon me. I grabbed her and forcefully raped her.
“I have never done anything like this before; this is my first time; it is the devil that pushed me into this. I am appealing to the girl’s parents and the police to have mercy on me. I will not do anything like this again. This is my first time doing something like this,” he pleaded.
However, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Julius Alawari, stated that the case is still under investigation and will be charged to court upon completion of due investigation.
