DHQ Rejects Ndume’s Claims of Terrorists Taking Over North-East

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims that terrorists could overrun parts of Nigeria’s North-East, insisting that the military remains in control despite recent attacks in Borno State.

Director of Media Operations, Maj Gen Michael Onoja, said on Tuesday, “There is no basis to conclude that they will overrun the region,” responding to concerns raised by former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, over the military’s capacity.

Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, had warned that Nigerian troops were struggling against terrorists’ firepower during recent assaults on Ngoshe and Pulka communities.

He called for the Federal Government to equip the army with modern weapons and adequate ammunition.

The senator spoke after visiting the devastated communities alongside Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.

Ndume described the destruction as complete, with homes and infrastructure wiped out, though he commended the army for eventually regaining control.

His warning comes amid a surge in violence in the region, including last week’s multiple suicide bombings in Maiduguri that killed at least 23 people and injured over 100 others.

While acknowledging the challenges on the ground, DHQ maintained that the military is capable of protecting the North-East and preventing terrorists from taking control.
