Disquiet As Kano Gov Empowers 2,386 Women With Goats
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has sparked widespread reactions following the distribution of 7,158 red goats to 2,386 women across the state as part of his administration’s women empowerment initiative.
The distribution, which marks the second phase of the Livestock Fattening Programme under the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project, is reportedly valued at N2.3 billion. Each beneficiary received three goats to support their entry into livestock entrepreneurship.
Speaking on Tuesday, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, explained that the initiative aims to reduce poverty and promote economic self-sufficiency among women in all 44 local government areas of Kano.
According to Dawakin-Tofa, the programme reflects the administration’s focus on sustainable development by empowering communities to drive grassroots economic growth.
He added that subsequent phases would include the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth, further integrating them into the agricultural value chain to enhance household incomes and reduce dependency on government aid.
While Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to combating poverty through inclusive and innovative approaches, he warned the beneficiaries against misusing the livestock, emphasizing accountability and responsibility.

However, the initiative has drawn mixed reactions on social media. While some commended the governor’s effort to tackle poverty and empower women, others criticized the gesture as out of touch with modern empowerment strategies.
One Facebook user, @Isaac Chris, lamented, “Chai! During election, they would rig for him and afterwards be rewarded with goats.”
Another, @Temitope Daniel, called the initiative a “joke,” adding laughing emojis to underscore his disapproval.
Similarly, @Zacheous E Thaiywoh described the move as an example of “new age stupidity in the North,” while @Kay Cee advised Nigerians to avoid being victims of such situations, writing, “Never let Nigeria happen to you.”
On the lighter side, @Berba Tov joked about turning the goats into an asun business, while @Omosola Amobi dismissed the initiative as “rubbish.”
