The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened with fresh allegations from the former Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke.

He has accused the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of orchestrating the bombing of the state House of Assembly complex in 2023.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Nwaeke claimed that Fubara ordered the attack to prevent his impeachment by lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

He further alleged that he was present at the Government House when a bag of money was handed over to Edison Ehie for the operation, though he could not confirm the amount inside.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn later on Friday when Nwaeke’s wife, Florence, publicly refuted the interview, insisting that the man who spoke was not her husband. She expressed concerns over his safety and well-being.

In an emotional interview with Channels TV, Florence recounted how she lost contact with her husband after he traveled to Abuja.

According to her, he called upon landing, but she later saw a viral interview allegedly featuring him, which she strongly disputed.

“When he got to Abuja, he called that he had landed. I said, ‘Thank God’.

“The next thing I saw this night (Friday night): people were calling me and said he got an interview. I said, ‘What interview? Interview for what?’

“Not until I saw things flying on the internet that he granted an interview. What happened? I said, ‘That is not my husband. That is not my husband.’

She further revealed that she had sent multiple messages to him, asking if he was under duress or in danger, but received no response. She fears that he may have been kidnapped or coerced into making the statements, as his phone lines are now unreachable.

“So I sent him a message. I said, ‘Are you under duress?’ I sent him a message. I said, ‘Have they kidnapped you? Talk to me now. Why are you not talking to me?’.

“Oh, Jesus, help me. Nigerians, help me. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. Look at the message I sent to him. See the message I sent to him.

“I said, ‘Daddy, why? Were you in hostage?’ I said, ‘Why didn’t you talk to me?’ These are the messages I sent to him, but he didn’t reply to me.

“His numbers are not going through. Nigerians, help me! Nigerians, help me!”

Pleading for help, Florence called on Fubara to intervene. “Governor, help me. My husband is in trouble,” she said.

She also claimed that her husband resigned under pressure after being forced to sign documents that would implicate Fubara.

“He decided to resign to avoid trouble. Instead of facing all these issues, he chose to step aside and submitted his resignation letter,” she added.

Meanwhile, in his interview, Dr. George Nwaeke maintained that Governor Fubara was responsible for the destruction of the Assembly complex.

“I want to tell the people of Rivers State today that the House of Assembly complex on Moscow Road was deliberately brought down by Edison Ehie under the instructions of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. I challenge him to an open confrontation, and I will provide more details,” Nwaeke declared.

He further claimed that he had considered resigning immediately after the attack but feared the power of a sitting governor. He also alleged that there was an attempt to destroy the residential quarters of the Assembly members, which was prevented by public outcry.

“If not for the press conference held there by Rivers youths, elders, and National Assembly members, that would have been another act of destruction in Rivers State.”

According to Nwaeke, Fubara later admitted to him that he would have demolished the entire Assembly quarters if he had known earlier that lawmakers were using the hall for their sittings.

“I was shocked and asked myself: how could a man who wants to lead his people be destroying state assets and wasting public funds on an unnecessary power struggle?” Nwaeke said.
