Driver Fleeing VIO Kills Heavily Pregnant Woman in Jos
A heavily pregnant woman, Ruth Nen Maurice, has died in a fatal accident in Jos, Plateau State, after a reckless driver allegedly fleeing Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) operatives struck her while she stood by the roadside on her way for antenatal care.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in the city centre of Jos.
Eyewitnesses said the accident happened as the driver attempted to escape from VIO operatives.
It was gathered that the woman was standing by the roadside waiting for a vehicle to take her to a hospital for antenatal care.
A close friend of the deceased, Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, who posted the sad news on Facebook on Wednesday, said the driver was carrying out a dangerous manoeuvre while fleeing a VIO checkpoint when he struck the pregnant woman.
“Ruth Nen Maurice… My dear, it’s hard to post this but God knows best,” Odumu wrote emotionally.
He further said Ruth was carrying twins and was close to her delivery date before the incident.
“A mother who was preparing to welcome twins back home never made it alive. Her unborn babies never got the chance to cry, breathe, or see this world because of somebody’s reckless decision,” Odumu wrote.
The Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident in a brief statement.
He said the driver had been arrested, adding that investigations had commenced and the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of inquiry.
