DSS Denies Kanu Agabi Access To Client Nnamdi Kanu In Custody

DSS Denies Kanu Agabi Access To Client Nnamdi Kanu In Custody

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday blocked Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), a former Senator and two-time Attorney-General of the Federation, from meeting with Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is in custody.

Agabi, who is part of Kanu’s legal team, had been previously notified to the DSS about the visit.

Kanu’s Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, condemned the action, calling it an interference with Kanu’s fair trial.

Ejimakor expressed his displeasure via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, demanding an explanation from the DSS.

He wrote, “The DSS needs to explain to Nigerians why it blocked Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) from meeting with his client Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The High Chief has left the DSS facility, very upset. This is a flagrant interference with fair trial.”

This latest incident follows the recent involvement of Agabi and Uchenna Njoku (SAN) in Kanu’s legal team. Kanu, who was controversially extradited from Kenya in June 2021, remains in DSS custody while facing a terrorism trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Nigerian government has re-arraigned Kanu on amended charges, including terrorism, with Kanu pleading not guilty. His detention has sparked significant protests, especially in southeastern Nigeria, where he has considerable support.
