DSS Detains Mahdi Shehu Over Viral Fake Video

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly detained controversial activist Mahdi Shehu in Kaduna over a viral fake video related to national security concerns.

Sources indicate that the DSS initially attempted to resolve the matter through dialogue with Shehu but resorted to arrest when these efforts failed.

While details surrounding the arrest remain unclear, instructions have been issued to ensure his rights are upheld during detention.

Insiders told News Diary Online that the Shehu may be dragged to court Monday or any day soon.

This is not the activitist’s first encounter with authorities. Earlier in 2024, he faced arrest after urging President Bola Tinubu to investigate former President Muhammadu Buhari and top officials from the previous administration.

However, a statement from Abubakar Malami’s legal team, signed by A.A. Sherif, clarified that Shehu’s previous arrest was linked to allegations of extortion rather than his calls for a probe.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to the above press statement made on February 7, 2024, as well as that of January 2024; and we, as solicitors to Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, and his family, noted with grave concern that the press statement is not correct, misleading, malicious and a gross misrepresentation of the facts leading to the arrest.

“Therefore, we write to set the record straight for the benefit of the public. Without prejudice to the police investigation that is ongoing, the facts relate to the complaint/petition which we wrote to the Inspector-General of Police on allegations (bordering) on extortion.”
