Tragedy struck on Wednesday at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, as a final year student, Kolawole Zainab, slumped and died moments before a scheduled examination.

Zainab, a Higher National Diploma II student of the Department of Quantity Surveying, was said to have collapsed while revising for her first semester paper, which was slated for 12 noon.

Multiple sources on campus confirmed that the deceased, who was also a mother of three, was preparing for the examination when the incident occurred. She was quickly rushed to the institution’s medical centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“It was so sudden. We were preparing for our paper when we heard she had collapsed. Her coursemates were thrown into panic. I doubt if the exam in her department even held again after the news broke,” a student who requested anonymity said.

Zainab’s demise has thrown the entire campus into mourning, with fellow students and lecturers expressing deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident.

A lecturer in the polytechnic, Mr David Olufunsho Fagboungbe, took to his Facebook page to lament the loss. Posting with tearful emojis, he wrote: “Tears, agony and grief today as female HND QS student of Federal Polytechnics, Ede and mother of 3 dies in the heat of ongoing first semester examination.”

When contacted by The Point, the institution’s Acting Director of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Mr Sola Lawal, confirmed the incident.

“It is true. Her name is Kolawole Zainab, an HND II student. She was brought in dead to the school medical centre,” he said.
