EDITORIAL: Kudos To The President

President Muhammadu Buhari deserves a lot of applause for approving the sum of 134. 7 Billion Naira debarment allowance for retired military officers. There had been some protests but the right thing has been done now.

Issues like this should not be ensnared in bureaucratic entanglement. Our valiant officers have really been stretched. They have been at the forefront of the war against the terrorists, bandits and assorted criminals. They have with great valiancy done work which the police should have done. They deserve our gratitude because there is still a long way to go.

How society treats it’s veterans is an indication of the moral fiber of the country. In the case of Nigeria there is a lot to be done. A lot should till be done for the veterans such as inflation-adjusted pensions, discounts on mortgages, health insurance enhancement and much more. This is what is done in other countries and we should strive in spite of a tight fiscal climate follow suit.

All bureaucratic roadblocks should now be streamlined in order to forestall future delays.

Vital lessons should have been learnt from this incident. All the same we appreciate the intervention of the president who is not just the Commander-in-Chief but also a former military officer himself.
