Edo Attack: Peter Obi Should Have Told Us Before Coming — Commissioner
Edo State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, has stated that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ought to have notified the state government before entering Edo.
Afegbua made the remark on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, while addressing the recent gunmen attack on Obi and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state.
Recalling last year’s statement by Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Commissioner said it was widely misinterpreted.
The governor had asked that Peter Obi seek clearance before visiting Edo, a request that Afegbua said was meant as a courtesy rather than a restriction.
“People misunderstood what Governor Okpebholo meant in July last year, suggesting that every time Peter Obi comes to Edo, he must inform the state government. As a politically exposed person, however, it is expected that he would extend the courtesy of informing the government of the day,” Afegbua explained.
He added that the recent attack should be seen as an internal dispute within the ADC rather than a broader political conflict. “What happened in Edo falls within the ambit of one faction of the ADC against another,” the Commissioner said.
