By Israel Afolabi

An educationist, Elder Ezekiel Adeyemo has urged members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU] to suspend their ongoing strike, with a view to protecting the future generation.

Elder Adeyemo, a retired School Principal made this appeal last Tuesday while speaking with OSUN DEFENDER in his home town, Oyan, Odo-Otin North Local Council Development Area [LCDA], State of Osun on the current strike embarked upon by ASUU.

He noted that there is a need for the government, particularly the Federal Government, Ministry of Education and Academics Staff Union of University [ASUU] to dialogue like Nigeria Labor Congress [NLC] and Trade Union Congress [TUC] did with the Federal Government so that students will return to school.

According to him, “frequent closure of schools leads to capital flight as Nigerians are usually forced to send their wards to foreign schools”.

Elder Adeyemo urges committee on Tertiary Institution and TETFUND to engage ASUU and Federal Ministry of Education to see possibility of compromising or taking actions that will lead to suspension of the industrial action, particularly with regards to funding.

He said, “All promises or terms of the agreement signed with ASUU by the government in the past should be fulfilled to make things work as expected.

The educationist then urged all relevant stakeholders in education sector to come together on a round table to resolve the matter concerning education at once for the benefit of coming generations.

He also advised government at all levels to increase education funding in their various budgets.
