EFCC Arrest Four For Impersonating Chairman

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, announced the arrest of a four-man fraud syndicate who had been impersonating its Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede.

The suspects were apprehended on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at two locations in Abuja: Gimbiya Street, Garki, and Apo Legislative Quarters.

A statement by EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale,noted that the suspects had been engaging in a blackmail scheme that targeted a former Managing Director of the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko.

The EFCC spokesperson explained that the suspects had contacted Mr. Bello-Koko, claiming that he was under investigation by the EFCC for unspecified offenses committed during his tenure as the MD of NPA.

“They alleged that Olukoyede was ready to give him a soft landing for $1 million or risk being arrested and prosecuted,” Oyewale said.

The EFCC operatives, however, were able to pose as the fraudsters and gather evidence, leading to the successful arrest of the suspects. The spokesperson confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court once the investigation is complete.

“On receipt of intelligence regarding the moves of the impersonators, operatives of the Commission were deployed to play along with the alleged fraudsters. They were successfully arrested and are in the custody of the Commission,” Oyewale said.

The EFCC spokesperson added that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
