The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of abandoning its constitutional duty of impartial anti-corruption enforcement to serve as a political tool for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday, the party alleged that the anti-graft agency had become a “political enforcer” for the APC, targeting opposition leaders with stale allegations while shielding ruling party allies from scrutiny.

The ADC claimed that in recent days, several senior members of the opposition coalition had received EFCC summons on what it described as “politically motivated” charges, often re-opened from years-old cases without fresh evidence.

The party further alleged that the EFCC had established a pattern of quietly dropping investigations into ruling party members, especially those who defect to the APC, while aggressively pursuing opposition figures to discredit them ahead of elections.

“It does appear that in today’s Nigeria, one’s guilt or innocence depends on one’s party membership, not evidence,” Abdullahi said.

He urged Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the independent media to resist what he termed a “dangerous slide into dictatorship” and warned that the EFCC belongs to the Nigerian people, not the ruling party.
