EFCC Says Yahaya Bello’s Political Moves Won’t Affect Ongoing Trials
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s renewed political activities in the All Progressives Congress (APC) could impact the pace or outcome of his ongoing criminal trials.
The EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, stated on Monday during the Arise News breakfast show that Bello’s involvement in party affairs and his declared senatorial ambition are irrelevant to the cases before the courts.
Uwujaren said Bello is currently facing trial over allegations of fraud and money laundering, and the prosecution process is proceeding strictly according to judicial procedures, independent of political considerations.
“The EFCC’s focus is solely on presenting its case before the courts. It is not our responsibility to determine guilt or innocenc.
“The constitution presumes anyone under trial is innocent until proven otherwise,” Uwujaren said.
He added that the agency remains committed to prosecuting the charges filed against Bello, noting that political developments within the APC do not influence its work.
“Whatever is happening with him in his party is party affairs. It has nothing to do with EFCC or the charges we have filed. Our obligation is to Nigerians and to the judicial process,” Uwujaren said.
Bello is being prosecuted at the Federal Capital Territory High Court and the Federal High Court in Abuja.
He is currently on bail and, in December 2025, declared his intention to contest a senatorial seat.
