Egypt Dispatches 200-Truck Humanitarian Convoy to Gaza
Egypt on Tuesday dispatched a 200-truck humanitarian aid convoy carrying 2,700 tonnes of relief materials from the Rafah crossing towards Kerem Shalom.
The supplies, which include food provided by the World Food Programme, fuel, medicines and other medical items, will undergo inspection by Israeli authorities before entering the Gaza Strip.
According to state television, the convoy marked the 23rd relief mission organised under the Egyptian Red Crescent initiative, which began on July 27.
The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification recently confirmed famine in parts of Gaza, citing extreme hunger and shortages of basic necessities.
Egypt has so far provided over 70 per cent of total aid to Gaza since the Hamas-Israel war broke out in October 2023.
The Foreign Ministry last week disclosed that more than 550,000 tonnes of relief have been transported through thousands of trucks, while about 5,000 remain stuck on the Egyptian side of Rafah.
Gaza health authorities reported on Tuesday that Israel’s military campaign over the past 22 months has killed 62,819 Palestinians and injured 158,629 others, while destroying large parts of the enclave’s infrastructure.
Within the last 24 hours alone, hospitals received 75 bodies and 370 injured persons.
“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads, with emergency and civil defence crews unable to reach them,” Gaza’s health ministry said.
So far, famine and malnutrition have claimed 303 lives, including 117 children, since the conflict began.
